What is Freight Forwarder?

A Freight Forwarder is a middleman between shippers and carriers that also takes possession of freight. Forwarders often accept a variety of shipments and consolidate them into larger FTL or FCL loads on behalf of a shipper. In this manner, freight forwarders also act as brokers.

Their most important aspects include:

  • Transportation coordination
  • Multimodal expertise
  • Consolidation and deconsolidation
  • Freight documentation
  • Storage and warehousing

At the international level, freight forwarders may also be able to assist with customs clearance and may offer specific cargo insurance beyond that provided by the carrier to mitigate various shipping risks.
