What is a Heat Exchanger?

A heat exchanger is a device that is constructed to transfer heat between two liquids, which are in contact or separated by a solid barrier. Heat exchangers are critical components in many types of electrical equipment, including:

  • Air conditioning
  • Chemical processors
  • Refrigeration systems

Heat exchangers are used all over the country and across the globe. They are used in a variety of fields, including:

  • Factories
  • Production plants
  • Marine and boat production plants
  • Swimming pool construction (to move water from boilers to the pool)

What are Common Heat Exchanger Heavy Haul Transport Items?

Heat exchangers are used in so many types of construction and are a critical transport item for the following:

  • Fluid Heat Exchangers
  • Tantalum Heat Exchanger
  • Plate Fin Heat Exchanger
  • Pillow Plate Heat Exchanger
  • Waste Heat Recovery Units

What Are the Types of Heat Exchangers?

What Are the Types of Heat Exchangers

There are many different types of heat exchangers that include:

  • Counter-flow
  • Parallelo flow
  • Finned tubular heat
  • Unfinned tubular heat
  • U-tube (single pass straight and two pass straight)
  • Plate-fin heat
  • Microchannel heat
  • Plate and frame heat

How Many Types of Heat Exchangers are There?

The two main types of heat exchangers are static heat exchangers and dynamic heat exchangers.

In static heat exchangers, the heat exchanger material are stationary as liquids flow through the device, while in dynamic heat exchangers, the material and components move through the heat transfer process. Both types are at risk of cross-contamination between fluid streams, necessitating careful design considerations during manufacturing.

Static Heat Exchanger Example

In one example of the static type, warmer fluid is run through one channel while cooler fluid runs through another for a fixed period of time at the end of which, through the use of quick-operating valves, flow is reversed such that the two fluids switch channels.

Dynamic Heat Exchanger Example

An example of the dynamic heat exchanger involves a spinning, thermally conductive component drum through which both warm and cool fluids keep moving in individual, sealed-off sections. As the component turns, any given section goes through the warmer steam and cooler streams, allowing for the component to retain heat from the warm liquid and transfer the heat to the cooler liquid as it passes through.
